Welcome to Manila Devi Temple

A Sacred Retreat in the Lap of the Himalayas

Nestled amidst the tranquil oak and rhododendron forests of Uttarakhand, Manila Devi Temple is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Manila Devi, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The word "Manila" means "charming" or "enchanting", and true to its name, the temple offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges and a spiritual aura that leaves every visitor spellbound.

Manila Devi Temple is a serene and sacred destination nestled in the heart of Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region. Revered as the kuldevi (family deity) of the Katyuri and Chand dynasties, Goddess Manila is worshipped here in a form of Durga, the goddess of power and protection. Whether you come seeking blessings or the bliss of the mountains, this temple offers a spiritual escape unlike any other.

The history of Manila Devi Temple dates back several centuries. The name "Manila" is derived from the Kumaoni word for “charming” or “beloved”, and local folklore tells of the goddess choosing this very site as her dwelling due to its divine vibrations and natural beauty.

According to legend, Goddess Durga appeared in the dream of a local shepherd, instructing him to build a shrine in her honor on this hill. Over time, the small shrine grew into a sacred pilgrimage site, protected and worshipped by rulers of Kumaon, especially the Chand kings of Almora, who made the temple their royal seat of worship.

Manila Devi Temple, located about 45 km from LaTigre Resort in Marchula, is a serene hilltop shrine dedicated to Goddess Manila, revered as a powerful form of Durga. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by car, winding through scenic forested roads via Mohaan. Known for its peaceful atmosphere and panoramic views of the Himalayas, the temple is a spiritual retreat ideal for quiet reflection and prayer. Facilities are basic, with small tea stalls offering simple vegetarian meals, so it’s best to carry cash and essentials. A visit here combines divine blessings with natural beauty, making it a perfect half-day trip from Marchula.

Located in Bhanoli village, Almora district, the temple is believed to be centuries old and holds immense cultural and religious significance for the Katyuri and Chand dynasties, who considered Goddess Manila as their kuldevi (family deity).
